What To Expect

Birgu (Vittoriosa)
Birgu, or Cittá Vittoriosa, is one of the oldest cities on the Island and played a crucial role in the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. The city, located on the south side of the Grand Harbour, is inhabited by 2,261 residents.

Birgu was once the main city in Malta and has a long history of military and maritime activities. Its position within the Grand harbour was of great importance and several military leaders wanted to take over the city. Therefore, the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans Byzantines, Arabs, Normans and the Aragonese all shaped and developed Birgu.

Yet, no one did more for the city than the Knights of St. John, who arrived in Malta in 1530 and made Birgu the capital of Malta.

Birgu is a unique city surrounded by fortified walls, ancient history, monuments and palaces.

Inquisitor's Palace
Your professional tour guide will also take you round one of the world’s last remaining Inquisitors’ palaces. Located in the heart of Birgu the palace hosted the Inquisitor himself. His gruesome role was that of assessing any situations which were not in line with Christian values or beliefs and then ordering related punishments which also included tortures.

This is also the only such palace in the world to be open to the general public. You will see the dominance of the Piano Nobile, the Holy Office Tribunal, a prison complex and a torture chamber.
