Built by the Knights of St. John in the mid-16th century on the strategically located island of Malta, Valletta quickly became a very important and cosmopolitan harbour city and a perfect place through which foreign culinary practices and new exciting ingredients would have been able to enter the island.
This tour is full of fascinating historical anecdotes specifically related to food and is thus very different from your normal sightseeing tour. Most of the stories will not be found in any guide book but are nonetheless a fascinating insight into the lesser-known parts of Malta’s history and culture.

In addition, you will get to sample authentic traditional Maltese food and drinks in a number of stops during the tour.

The guide will also provide tips on where and what to eat during your stay in Malta, as well as the best places to shop for authentic Maltese food.

Don’t miss this fascinating insight into Maltese culture.

Enjoyed the private food tour!

Food tour was very enjoyable. Matthew has taught us so much about Malta and the history of food as we toured Valetta. He has an enormous wealth of knowledge and is a very enthusiastic guide. He’s also very considerate and took the three of us to quiet areas and kept us under the shade where possible. We had a pastizzi mid way through the tour which was lovely. And ended the tour with a selection of Maltese food which was all organised. We booked a private tour to avoid the stress of mixing in with people and it was well worth it! Great experience all around

Actually we did custom half day tour which included Valetta, Birgu and Senglea.
Mario was an excellent and knowledgeable guide. He took us on over 4hrs adventure through Valetta and three cities history.
Amazing tour.. However would be nice to have a little break half way through
Not typical food tour

It was the best food tour I have ever been.
It was not focused on food in the sense of different local meals - but on the meaning of food (preparation, storage, shortages, food-related diseases) in the history of Valletta and Malta. So it was actually a historical tour, with a focus on food at different times in history and historical events or changes in the community which were related to food.
We learned how grain was stored in Malta during the time of the knights, about the history of bakeries managed by them, about the storage of water in the event of a siege, why during the time of the knights there were no gardens in Valletta, the Victory Kitchen and many, many other events from the history.
They were fascinating stories, much more interesting than typical stories about wars and conquests.
At the end of the trip, we also had the opportunity to taste (a lot of) local dishes.
I highly recommend!
Highly recommend as cruise shore excursion, especially if in port only 1 day!

Matthew was our guide. He was fantastic! He is a walking encyclopedia with lots of interesting culture and history tidbits. He was the opposite of boring, really kept everything flowing well and my teenage kids attention. He is also native to Malta which I think makes a huge difference. We have done many food tours throughout our Europe travels and this was one of the best. The pace was perfect, walking wise and food wise. Got to try a variety of local foods. I had asked the company beforehand how much food would be provided on tour so that we could plan accordingly (tour started 10:30) and they replied would be a lunch equivalent. Honestly I would say it was more like 2-3 lunches! For the fact it was a private tour, this was a great value. In Paris we paid double for joining a small group tour!
Fantastic food tour

We had the most incredible walking food tour of Valletta with our Guide Ben. We had a limited amount of time on a very hot day, he made the tour fun and interactive and we learnt the wonderful history, culture and architecture of the beautiful Valletta. We got to sample a wide of array of traditional Maltese food along the way which was wonderful a experience. I would highly recommend this tour and the excellent tour guide Ben .
